Additionally, measures of fitness have been linked to tactical athlete performance. However, no research has been conducted to examine the effect of weight categorization (normal, overweight, obese) on measures of fitness among police officers. PURPOSE: To examine the effect of weight categorization on police officer fitness. METHODS: Active duty police officers in the Midwest region of the United States (N = 34; 4 females; 33.0 ± 9.3 yrs; 177.3 ± 8.3 cm; 87.9 ± 15.1 kg) completed all laboratory measures off-duty. Based on body mass index (BMI), participants were categorized into normal weight (BMI < 24.9, n = 11), overweight (25.0 < BMI < 29.9, n = 13), and obese (BMI > 30.0, n = 10) groups. To assess fitness (i.e., body fat %, estimated VO2max, peak muscular power), participants completed whole body biological impedance analysis, a 3-minute Queen’s College Step Test, and a Wingate Anaerobic Bike Test. To determine the effect of weight categorization on measures of fitness, a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) test was conducted, with age held as a covariate. An alpha level of 0.05 was used to determine statistical significance. RESULTS: A significant effect of weight categorization on measures of fitness was observed (F6,34 = 5,874, p < .001). Pairwise comparisons further indicated that normal weight participants had significant lower body fat % than obese participants (p < .001) but not overweight participants (p = .100). Overweight participants had significantly lower body fat % than obese participants (p = .010). No significant differences were observed for estimated VO2max between weight categorizations. Normal-weight participants had significantly lower peak power than overweight (p = .036) and obese (p = .001) participants. No significant difference was observed between the peak power of overweight and obese participants. No significant difference was observed between the peak power of overweight and obese participants. CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate that regardless of weight categorization, officers possessed equivalent aerobic capacities, and that overweight and obese participants generated higher peak power than normal weight participants. Thus, the effects of body weight on tactical athletes’ health, fitness, and performance may be more complex than previously assumed.99:["$","$L9c",null,{"params":{"id":["w1","20260521","EF1B603C"]},"searchParams":{},"initialWork":{"id":"09ea5ced-3e78-4074-83ec-fb23747983d2","nobleId":"NI6P83W74R31S46","arkIdentifier":"ark:/48914/w1/20260521/EF1B603C","workTitle":"Examining The Effect Of Weight Categorization On Active Duty Police Officer Fitness","workType":"Journal Article","authors":[{"name":"Stacy L.
